Lawful Interception (aka voice and signalling sniffing) equipment has been deployed and is in use for both traditional PSTN networks and internet connections. With the advent of Voice over IP applications the governments step-by-step adopted laws to extend PSTN interception to VoIP. The talk gives an introduction to the applying laws, rules of conduct and the basic PSTN setup. Sample VoIP setups show drawbacks and the resulting development and intermediate steps of the german Law Enforcement Agency (LEA) named Bundesnetzagentur that eventually aim to gain as much information as possible while still allowing companies to run a lucrative business. An outlook to possible countermeasures and detection methods will be given.
