[Video] Giving Great Workshops

Tags: social
Event: Chaos Communication Camp 2011
Abstract: Mitch Altman has taught well over 10,000 people to solder and make cool things at workshops around the world. Drawing from his experiences, this lecture will show you how to create and give your own successful workshops about what you know. We all know something that others can benefit from, that others want to learn. A workshop is a gratifying way to share what you know with others. One of the reasons for the increasing popularity of Maker Faires, hacker conferences, and hackerspaces is that they all provide workshops. Workshops are not only fun, but they work. They incorporate learning-by-doing, a very effective method of teaching, learning, and sharing knowledge and skills. They also make use of the community that forms during the workshop, where all participants become available to help one another. Creation within community is a very compelling combination that we can all make use of and enjoy. This is what a successful workshop is all about. In this lecture Mitch Altman will share what he has learned from his experience giving workshops around the world for the last few years. Although he teaches people how to solder and to make cool things with microcontrollers, what Mitch has learned about giving workshops is applicable to giving a workshop on just about any topic. Topics included: Choosing an objective that can be accomplished in the allotted time, including setup and cleanup. Choosing a topic that is appropriate for a workshop format, where all participants can create something. Making the workshop an enjoyable process for all. Building confidence and enthusiasm that will be shared with others during and after the workshop. Making your workshop appear effortless and easy to the participants. Preparation needed before planning the workshop. Taking your workshop on the road.

[Audio] Three jobs that journalists will do in 2050

Authors: Annalee Newitz
Tags: social
Event: Chaos Communication Congress 27th (27C3) 2010
Abstract: Print media are dying, but what is rising up to take their place? In this presentation, I'll answer that question by describing three new kinds of jobs for journalists that do not exist in mainstream print media. These jobs are: hacker journalist, data-mining reporter, and crowd engineer. I'll be describing what these jobs entail, and current examples of organizations already employing people to do them. My observations in this presentation are based on the nearly twenty years I have written for traditional print as well as new media publications, including zines like Bad Subjects and 2600, as well as mainstream media outlets like Wired and the Washington Post. I also created io9.com, the world's most widely-read blog devoted to science and science fiction. As I've watched friends and colleagues suffer through layoffs in the publishing industry, I've also seen the rise of new kinds of journalists who use technology to break stories in ways that would have been impossible even five years ago. Hacker journalists use everything from Perl scripts to open source mapping platforms to do investigative reporting (examples include writing at Ars Technica, as well as people working with the Ushahidi mapping platform). Data-mining reporters are people who analyze vast amounts of data to investigate issues from war crimes (using services like Wikileaks) to the stock market "flash crash". Crowd engineers work on crowd-sourced news sites like Reddit and Metafilter, writing algorithms and community software that makes it easy for people to share information. Like editors, crowd engineers can be very powerful figures who determine which information rises to the top. What these new journalists have in common is a newfound ability to aggregate and analyze information on a massive scale. Ultimately I'll explore how this changes the playing field in media, and why journalists of the future may be more powerful than ever before.

[Video] Cognitive Psychology for Hackers

Tags: social
Event: Chaos Communication Congress 27th (27C3) 2010
Abstract: Experience firsthand some of the most interesting, surprising, and perspective-changing findings from cognitive and social neuropsychology. With perceptual illusions, priming, biases, heuristics, and unconscious influences, humans have tons of firmware "bugs". All have exploits; some even have patches. Learn how to improve your own thinking, use others' bugs to your advantage, and gain new perspective on the unconscious and often illusory processes involved in your perceptions. This interactive talk goes through as many interesting, surprising, perspective-changing findings from the cognitive sciences as I can fit in one hour while ensuring that as much as possible has a real, live demonstration that the audience participates in (rather than merely being told about). It's not just a collection of 'stupid human tricks' (though I'll be using lots of those for examples); this is a coherent narrative about surprising ways in which humans are flawed, how these aren't just things that happen to "other people", and how one might go about improving the situation at least for oneself. Every point will be supported by good science, with references to papers for those who care to read up more about them. Come to the meditation workshop afterwards to learn several more interesting and powerful techniques to proactively control your own mindstate.

Every year, in Barcelona 1500 people gather for the biggest free/libre culture Show of all times ;-). Artists and performers from all areas of Spanish and international culture take part in a "Gala";-) in which artists say "Not in my name" to the commercialisation of culture, "Not in my name" to limiting the potential of digital media and to criminalization of the Internet. More than 7 years and 400 episodes later, with the help of listeners and friends, I have travelled almost nonstop to some of the most interesting and unexpected corners of the world. These travels have led me to some unconventional guests, topics, and life choices. Through it all, week after week, I have kept the program going. The lessons I've learned and continue to learn going forward, tell a story that answers alot of today's most popular questions about the future of the internet and independent journalism. From crowd source funding to the streets of New Orleans, from itunes politics to the mountains of Afghanistan, I will share these stories and whatever wisdom they have brought me.

Its focus is the changing nature of money and the rise of the monied class in US and Europe. It outlines how the modern system of banking was instituted, how international organising allowed the power of the rich to gradually eclipse that of national governments, how war was managed for profit, and how the super-rich set about using the organs of the state in an effort to secure their position of control.

It outlines how the modern system of banking was instituted, how international organising allowed the power of the rich to gradually eclipse that of national governments, how war was managed for profit, and how the super-rich set about using the organs of the state in an effort to secure their position of control.

[Audio] Does Hacktivism Matter?

Authors: Kai Denker
Tags: social
Event: Chaos Communication Congress 28th (28C3) 2011
Abstract: Do you remember those days when hackers were “real men?” When hacking was not yet a crime and the cyberspace an undiscovered land? Just before anti-hacking laws were introduced in Germany? Back in these days, the famous founding father of the CCC made the Bundespost (Germany's Federal Mail Service) meet its Waterloo, when they hacked Bildschirmtext (Btx)—the epitome of both technological utopias and dystopias at that time. But soon, hackers suffered a setback: new laws criminalized hacking in the name of fighting white-collar crimes. Simultaneously to the laws, things were getting rougher in the media and the public opinion. While being seen as a weird vanguard of technology before, hackers soon became pranksters and outlaws. Apparently hacktivism, the portmanteau word for hacking activism, had failed to shape the policies in the dawning information society. However, there are evidences that hacktivism had an impact on the new computer crime legislation—not in terms of having more, but less restrictions implemented in the law. In my talk, I take a historian's point of view. First, I will show in which atmosphere of anxiety and excitement information technology evolved in Germany in the early 1980s. Then, I will give a very short description of the Btx hack, which is usually neglected in historical science. After giving this background, I will reconstruct the debates of white-collar crime law-making in context of the “2. WiKG” (Zweites Wirtschaftskriminalitätsbekämpfungsgesetz) in 1984-86. I will show, how different stakeholders demanded a strict law that penalized virtually every aspect of hacking while the politicians—even those from the conservative party—honored the guys who unveiled security flaws in Btx. This had led to the invention of “good” and “bad” hackers in juridical discourses. This distinction has been maintained in law journals, but likewise neglected in most court decisions. My talk will conclude by arguing that hacktivism matters in shaping policies by indirectly changing mind-sets, even if it fails to win every single battle. So, the impact of hacktivism is not part of a rational debate, but of a more complex strategic situation in which rational arguments only play a minor role.

The talk is delivered in two parts, both of which are intended to shine a fun light on visual social network analysis. The first part introduces how you can extend the powerful data visualization tool, Maltego to speed up and automate the data mining and analysis of social networks. I’ll show how I analyzed skateboard legend, Tony Hawk’s twitter hunt and highlight how you could use the same techniques to set up your very own backyard miniature ECHELON. The second part illustrates how these techniques have been used to enumerate a 419 scam, infiltrate the scammers social network and expose deeper, more sinister links to organized crime. I focus specifically on Twitter and Facebook, demonstrating how you can graphically map and analyze social relationships using the Twitter API's, publicly available Facebook profiles, screen scraping and some clunky regex.
